Top 3 Tips for Setting up a New Google AdWords Campaign

06/21/2026

As with everything in business, strategy is the key to running a successful AdWords pay-per-click (PPC) campaign. Here are my top 3 tips to keep in mind when setting up a new campaign:

-Create a list of categories and sub-categories that cover the different products and/or services you sell. These will become your campaigns (categories) and ad groups (sub-categories).

-Once you have your ad groups all figured out you can then focus on keywords. There is really only one free tool that is worth using and that is of course Google’s Keyword Planner Tool. In addition I also recommend using Google’s autocomplete (these are the suggestions that pop up when you begin to type in a search query) and use the results as a guide for potential additional keyword ideas.

-Lastly you want to make sure you have well written ads that include a strong call-to-action (CTA). I’ve found that the ad title should closely match the keyword/ad group, the first line of text should be a benefit statement, and the second line of text should be the CTA. And then the display URL should reinforce the title of the ad. The ads are the only thing a potential customer/client see’s, so it’s absolutely vital to maximize the amount of characters allowed to engage your target audience and put yourself in the best position to get the click.

Of course there are definitely more things to optimize within each campaign (targeting settings, negative keywords, ad extension options, etc.) but the 3 I listed above are the most important in my opinion. So you will definitely want to make sure that you don’t forget or skip them.
